A couple of years ago I was sailing S.F. Bay with my friend Maurice on his
P.19. We came upon a sea battle between the Lady washington and the Hawaiian
Chieftain. Both ships were under full sail and were firing at each other, it
was fabulous! After the battle was over, the Lady Washington headed for
Oakland. We were right behind her, and I thought it would be fun to try and
catch her. We tried every Potter sailing trick in the book to get more speed,
soon we were actually gaining on her. Several minutes later we were alongside
her, when someone yelled out Fire in the Hole! A cannon cut loose and gave us
a broadside. To the best of my knowledge this is the first time a West Wight
Potter has ever been fired upon by a pirate ship.
