Thanks for all the help with the winch, I've concluded it is not working
properly. It must of been hit by lightning so I ordered a new one from I.M.
for $168 plus shipping. The guy at I.M. was real nice and had a good sense
of humor.
For simple and easy lightning protection I would recommend placing chains
with clips on the end on the forestay and the shrouds into the water. The
clips attach the chains to the rigging. This would direct currents outside
of the boat. The very first thing I would do is get out of the water. You
can't lightning proof a boat, you can only minimize the damage. Your battery
will also explode when hit, it may pay to physically disconnect it (dont
depend on those wimpy battery switches). You can also hook a chain to the
mast and toss it in the water too. A cable from the mast to the keel is ok
but I dont prefer one million amps running next to my head or my body's
electrical system.
