I was looking through a copy of "Wooden Boat" magazine (Jul/Aug 99) and
noticed several interesting things. Firstly it looks like the P-19 has a big
brother (or sister) (in concept, not manufacturer) known as a Thunderbird.
They're a 25 foot hard chine plywood sailboat that claims to reach 12 knots
plus. They have a strong following, and seem to have followed in the P-14's
wake with several passages (transpacific, Puget Sound to Hawaii).
Another thing I noticed was on page 129. It's plans for a boat known as a
Nantucket Solo, a 25 ft full comfort live aboard. It has such features as an
insulated hull, composting toilet, wash water reclaim system, stand up
engine room, co-generation heating (composting toilet?), two wind machines
and solar power. I couldn't help noting it looked like the Unabomber's cabin
with sails. Are composting toilets made for sailboats or are they custom? Is
methane a by product of composting? Can I use the compost to grow bean
sprouts? Why is the term "solar powered" used? I think the term "nuclear
powered" is more accurate. After all, the sun is nuclear powered (fusion and
fission). It is also uncontrolled and unshielded. To recreate "solar power"
here on earth one would have to remove the containment building around a
nuclear reactor and let it melt down (actually blow up). Then you can aim
your solar panel at it. Be sure to wear SPF 45 sunscreen.
