I think I used a clamcleat because it is cheap and simple, but it doesn't
matter. A horn cleat would do as well or better. Or you could just tie the
line to a grab handle.

Correction on the bullet fairlead location: It is actually on the forward
face of the cabintop, right at the top edge.
