All
I might have missed something in all of this, but isn't an overdrive =
gear an over-drive gear? I grew up in an era when overdrive was an =
extra switch on the shift lever on my grandpa's 40's (something) =
Chrysler. Even without towing anything he only used the "extra" gear =
when out on the open road. =20
Today I have a 92 Toy(ota) truck with a 5 speed manual trany. The 5th =
gear is called OD in the book so I treated it like one. I never went =
into 5th when towing HC (P-19), and I kept it under 60 MPH. Only =
problem that I had was the clutch. 130,000 miles and on our third =
clutch.
The main reason that cars today are built with OD gears almost as =
standard equipment is so they can meet the governments mileage =
requirements, not because the engines are stronger (and can handle the =
extra load imposed by driving in OD) then that cast iron monster that =
hid under the hood of Grandpa's Chrysler. So, drive in OD if you must, =
and push that little al-u-MINI-um engine hard... after all, mechanics =
need to earn a living too.
