I have a 1999 2.5 HP Mercury on P15 s/n 2201, paid $592 for it at Defender
Industries here in Connecticut last month. It runs exactly 1 hour at full
throttle for the 48 ounce tank. GPS tests show the boat moves at 4.5 knots
for a two way average which is to say the hull speed for the boat and also
5.2 statute miles per hour, therefore the boat gets 13.8 statute miles per
gallon at about 50 cents per hour for fuel and oil. The motor is made in
Japan and it looks it. It is flawless, every part fits like a watch. Half
the times, it starts up on the first pull even when sitting for days, and
always starts up on the first pull when it is warmed up. I especially like
the see-through gas tank so you can keep track of the fuel. The motor is
extremely smooth at the upper half of the throttle which is the only
positions you would use it anyway. Any single cylinder engine will vibrate
at low RPM's, and the Merc is no exception, but this is the result of the
motor mount hanging off the weak transom, but I only idle a few seconds a
day as I approach the slip. This is a good motor for this boat but perhaps
an extra horsepower would be advised if you are going against a current such
as on a river with tidal current.
