Hi all, this is my first question to the Potter board. On my new =
Potter I ordered a 110 Lapper which I thought was also called a Genoa. =
I now understand that I will be sailing in some heavier winds and wonder =
if I should install a roller furling and keep the lapper or also get a =
Jib for heavier weather. Also, the Genoa that is offered for the =
Potter, is that larger than the 110 lapper? If so how much larger. If =
I get the roller furling than do I need the smaller jib?
=20
Any advice would be appreciated.

The Roller Furling question is one of the greater of the many =
debates that have surged through this list.
=20
On the surface it seems to go like this: RF's give convenience and =
simplicity of operation. Multiple sails are inconvenient and even can =
be dangerous to use.
=20
Truth is, setting up and maintaining a RF system can be quite =
involved, and if you don't keep up on the maintenance you might find =
(without warning) the mast joining you in the cockpit. What about the =
cost? An RF system is about the same as the two extra sails you might =
want to carry on a P-19 (working jib and Genny). In NorCal the Genny is =
only needed for small periods in the spring and fall, but a Working Jib =
can be needed year around so most of us carried a WJ and a lapper. =20
=20
The other problem I have seen with RFs is the Loss of about 5-10 =
degrees of point. I sailed against a couple of boats in the club that =
had RFs and watched them fall off when they reefed in the head sail.
=20
I think it comes down to what feels good (and safe) to you, so I =
would suggest that you find a boat locally that has a RF installed and =
bum a ride.
