Amen Bill! The autopilot is a great gizmo. I have one of the first
ones - a Tiller Master which has the fluxgate compass and uses nylon
fishline inside (easy to repair) to drive the actuator arm! Works great
on reaches but too slow (and dangerous) on runs. I also made a trim-tab
windvane that works great on the standard spade rudder on same points of
sail and have used each at different times across the Santa Barbara
Channel to the islands. Combined with my companion-way sitting hammock
(feet rest on port/starboard cabinets in cabin) and steady 15 mph winds,
'tis devine!
