Yes. The batten sticks out at almost a 90 degree angle to the mast or yard.
On the new boats it is roughly parallel to the boom when lowered. On the
gunter rig the batten is vertical when the yard is lowered, which makes it
perpendicular to the boom.

That would be a shame. Perhaps you could return it to IM or sell it to
someone here. You could have another sail like your original made at any
sail loft. If you can sew you could get a kit from SailRite and make your
own. I understand they are very helpful and provide detailed instructions
as well as all the materials and parts, but I have no personal experience
with them. You could also send your old sail there (or to another
sailmaker) and they will make a new one like it - probably your best bet. .

Jerry Barrilleaux had new sails made for his HMS-18 (P19) at Skip Elliott
in Costa Mesa, CA, the still-in-business maker of his original sails from
the mid-1970s. They may still have the specs for the gunter or Mk I sails.
The Mk I sails were about the same as the gunter sails except I think they
were set loose-footed instead of in the boom slot. Jerry's sails work very
well. No one can catch him, except possibly Judy, who also has new sails.
