I have used a 2 cylinder 3.0 hp 1996 Johnson on P15 s/n2201 for 4 years and
then a 2.5 hp 1999 Mercury for the past 2 months. The 3.0 hp gave me a GPS
speed of 5.5 knots which is above the hull speed of the boat and the 2.5 hp
1999 Mercury gives me a GPS hull speed of 4.5 knots which is exactly the
hull speed of the boat. The 3.0 hp is more than you will need, the bow will
rise about 6 inches at full power making it a little difficult to see ahead.
Of course you can always cut back on the throttle. Any motor in the 2-3 hp
range is all you need for this boat. The 2.5 hp mercury runs exactly 1 hour
and 20 seconds at full throttle on the 1.5 quart tank which computes out to
12 nautical miles per gallon at full throttle. The 2 cylinder 3 HP Johnson
used 88 ounces of fuel per hour at full throttle and 5.5 knots which works
out to only 7.27 nautical miles per gallon at full throttle. I bought the
2.5 hp mercury at Defender Industries here in Connecticut a few months back
for $592, it is made in Japan and it appears to be made by Tohatsu for
Mercury although this is just guess.
