Glad another HMS 18 has a friend! Ours still has the original wacky
cabin top winch. After a season of using the thing, I think we will
keep it as is. It is just so delightfully weird. Also, there is so
little extra interior cabin space, I hesitate to install another knee
knocker or head banger in it.

At some point I think a previous owner drilled holes to put in two large
bolts through keel to hold it up. I does not rock, but sometimes we
have to shift the thing back and forth a bit to get the bolts through
it.

I imagine you already know this, but just to be on the safe side, be
really certain to tie the keel in the down position while sailing! Ours
has a jam cleat on the aft end of the trunk for this purpose.
