I like your solution to reefing under control!
It seems much better than what I've done in the past, which was to furl the
jib,start the 5hp motor ( to keep me pointed into the wind), then go forward
enough to get the main sail reefed.
For clarification, do you have a second downhaul originating at the reefing
grommet at the luff? How do you anchor this point from the cocpit?
