Took my Siren 17 out for its first sail today after a year's
worth of modifications (converting to gunter rig the main one.)
Lots of fun, especially getting to use the Seagull engine that I
refurbished for the first time. (Thanks Harry Gordon.) It was
not as noisy as I had been led to believe it would be, nor was it
as smokey. Gas leakage out of the carb bowl is under control,
but a little more than I like. The engine was powerful,
reliable, and smooth-running.

NOTE: Before I used this engine today I added an air filter that
I modified from a Briggs and Stratton engine. I experimented
today to see how much power the filter "robs" from the engine by
unscrewing it, and running the engine as it is normally designed
with no filter. Turns out that using the filter INCREASED the
power. This tells me that the engine as normally set is fuel
starved (likely due to being under-jetted.) The filter forces
the mixture to be a little richer, and the hp is noticably
increased. You other Seagullers may want to try this. I'll get
a photo of the filter modification posted to the Potter list/ or
website if anyone want me to.

Happily sailing my Potterish Siren 17,
Bill Longyard
