Potter Yachters and Web Gang:
As per Judy's request, I am listing all the items that will be checked
by the Coast Guard Auxiliary Vessel Examiners during a CME (Courtesy
Marine Examination)
that pertain to Potters and similar trailerable sailboats:
1. Numbering.....CF numbers must be visible, correctly spaced and match
that of the registration card.
2. Registration/Documentation....registration document must be present
on vessel. Information on the Registration must match yours and your
vessel's information.
3. Navigation lights.....as long as you have an outboard (including
electric) on your transom, your boat will have to conform to the
lighting requirements of a power driven vessel. You will need a red
port light, a green starboard light, and a white stern light. The
sidelights can be the combination type.
4. Sound Producing Devices.....can be an air-horn, or a whistle.
5. Personal Floatation Devices....a minimum of 1 type IV (buoyant
cushion) per vessel plus 1 type 1, II or III PFD for each person on
board. They must be of sizes that fit the persons on board....that is,
child-size PFD's for any children on board.
They must be in a place that is readily availablel
6. Fire extinguishers....not required for outboard motorboats less than
26 feet but
highly recommended. They must be fully charged and mounted at a
convenient spot.
7. Visual Distress Signals.....flares, flashlight, mirror,
bright-colored flag, etc.
8. Ventilation....boats with inboard motors.
9. Backfire Flame Arrester....n/a for trailerable sailboats.
10. Fuel systems.....n/a
11. Anchor and anchor line
12. Alternate propulsion....show them your paddle!
13. Dewatering Device.....pump, bucket or pail.
14. General conditions......seaworthiness
Additional information they will need:
Hull Identification number.....must match # on registration.
These exams are meant as a 'friendly exchange of boating safety
information' between boaters. There are no penalties for not passing,
but only suggestions made to install the safety equipment needed.
If you have any questions on the CME, you are welcome to e-mail me and I
will either look them up, or consult one of my Auxiliary Examiner
buddies for you. Those of you in the Group that are Auxiliarist, please
feel free to point out errors or omissions to the above list. Thank
you.
