Hi Jack:
Remembering that the boom vang exerts unwanted force against the gooseneck
as well as wanted force down on the boom, if you, like most of us, want the
lower attachment point at the base of the mast, rather than on a curved
track on the cabin top, an angle of 45º is the best you can do. Because
that results in a short lever arm on the boom with need for a higher
mechanical advantage, somewhere around 30º is a good working solution for a
3:1 vang.
