In my never-ending search for simplicity, I don't use any such cross
lashing. I did, however, shorten the mast crutch early on to bring the mast
closer to horizontal (and to be able to get it under the overhead doors in
a plant I was working in), thus lessening the strain on the crutch. I do
lash the mast to the crutch and the crutch to the top gudgeon w/
miscellaneous light line. No problems in 25,000 + miles.
