I'm the one with the 32-year-old centerboard. The galvanizing was still
good even though much of my sailing has been in saltwater, and I've never
attempted to wash off the CB. But I've never kept it in saltwater for
longer than a few days. It probably would deteriorate if kept in saltwater.
I painted over the old galvanize with a gray hammertone, which seems to be
adhering well so far.
