Hi Potter friends..
The P-15 and trailer with a lot of stuff in it will
weigh only about 800-850 lbs. total load.. We have
towed our P-15 with a 2 liter engine Toyota Van, with
an 88 Toyota Pickup, with a VW Rabbit, a little Ford
Ranger pickup, no problems. Many of the smaller cars
are rated to tow 1000 lbs on a bumper hitch, and many
of our fellow Potter sailors in our Northern California
Club, like Harry Gordon, have towed with small cars.
I guess the reason I'm seconding Harry's letter, is that
I know that travelling somewhere with a worried mind over
whether or not you're harming your car can really put a
damper on enjoying the journey, and it is good to know
that a lot of folks tow their P-15's and P-14's with
small older vehicles and seem to do just fine. If we
ever get a 19ft. Potter, which we eventually want to do,
it will be good to know we can poll the 19 owners on the
web for what they are towing with, and how things have
worked out. I am much encouraged that we won't need a
bigger car then our present small Ford Ranger after reading
about Cap'n Judy's good experiences towing heavy stuff
in the mountains with her small van. Another advantage
of easy Potter towing is pretty good gas mileage.. we get
about 20-21mpg towing the P-15 at freeway speeds.
Cheers,
Bruce
