I think the term is called boat pox. They have remained the same over the
years and I have done nothing about them. I just made a decision not to keep
my boat in the water. I suspect that the reason we have not heard more about
it on Potters is because most members keep their boats out of the water and
on a trailer. Don Casey in his book, Sailboat Hull & Deck Repair, says "Pox
is a systemic condition and requires remedial action." Bottom line, remove
the gel coat below the surface and totally dry out the boat. Then reseal the
hull with an epoxy barrier coat such as West System epoxy.

Much has been written on this subject. I remember reading somewhere that
cold water aggravates the situation.
