Ahhh, there's the answer: if there's wind, use the sails!

Seriously, I could do much better than you describe when I tested sculling.
I think being heavy (momentum effects) positively affects directional
stability in a breeze. For more second-hand testimonials, see any of the
Pardey's books. Lin -- a mere wisp of a lass -- could purportedly do quite
well sculling their very heavy 24 footer.
