LLoyd,

I didn't get you message, just saw Grover's answer. I would
like to offer an alternative view of lowering or raising the
mast on the P19! A second opinion, if you will!

I have done it numerous times with one helper with NO
problem.. The method I use is to tie another line to the
jib halyard and wrap it twice around the bow pulpit. Then
my helper, usually my lovely but not athletic wife, holds
tension on the line while I release the forestay. Then as I
am ready the helper slacks the line a little at a time at my
command and I can walk it down. At any time I can say
"STOP" amd helper puts tension on the line. Then I am
steading and NO LIFTING. I am short, 5' 6 3/4" in stocking
feet, pushing 63 (2 weeks) and not athletic. I have to
climb down from the cabin roof to the cockpit seats WITHOUT
having to HOLD the mast. I can steady it with one hand. The
trick is to have tension on the line UNTIL you are ready to
take it down a little further. Raising it is the reverse
and NOT a problem for ME!

I have raised the mast ONE time by myself, on the trailer at
home, when I wanted to work on rigging and had no helper.
It was a STRETCHHHHH for me, and I agree with Grover I will
NOT do it alone again!

I am considering sidestays and have worked out a plan in my
mind to make it safer using a block attached to the bow
pulpit and a cleat mounted somewhere on the cabin roof.
That way I can loosen tension myself and then cleat it off.
Using this method I think I could do i alone. I guess I
could go to the GIN pole method, BUT ANOTHER POLE is NOT
what I need to keep track of, store or rig. Another man's
opinion.

I suggest you find a P19 and try raising and lowering it
yourself, I am in Fairfield, VA if I can help. There are
P19's all over the USA.

Merry Christmas to All,
