The problem going to windward may very well be caused by my use of the std.
jib fairlead and cleat (since my boat has no genoa tracks or hardware). I can
see how that might pull the leech very tight when close-hauled and have an
adverse effect on flow over the mainsail. Also, pulling "down" too much and
not enough "back" may cause the draft to be too far forward and contribute to
the lee helm I observed.
