On the 15 foot Potter the question of how to handle the foresail is
pretty easy. In light air do anything you want. The wind and wave will
let you crawl all over the boat. For those with a genny, they should
have them changed to the working jib before the weather gets bad enough
to be a problem (get all sails down before the thunder storm hits). It
is only when the wind and waves get bad that we have to have a better
system. By that time I hope you only have the tiny working jib up, then
the only thing you have to do is find a safe way to bring it down, not
make it smaller. A ten square foot jib isn't going to do you much good.
In really bad weather, you are better off with a reefed main and no jib.
If it is too bad for that, bring all the sails down and use the engine.

The best way to lower the foresail in nasty weather is to rig a downhaul.
It cost next to nothing and has almost nothing to break. But the best
part is that it is FAST and you don't have to leave the cockpit. Once
you have it down, pull your sheets in tight and it will not blow around.
