In Phil Bolger's "103 Sailing Rigs" there's a drawing of a boat that carries a rotor, similar to a helicopter rotor (although it spins horizontally, like a pinwheel rather than vertically) instead of sails. The rotor is mechanically linked to a propeller and sails at its best speed directly INTO the wind. It was designed in 1850 by a guy named Herrreshoff and working models have been built.

How about the the 'motor' boat driven by a squirrel-cage type vertical sail. The wind turned-the-fan-turned-the-screw-and-away-it-went.
