A non intrusive installation for a traveler for a P-19 may be had by
modifying the rudder assembly.

1. Cut a hole in the transom behind the water-collecting storage cubby that
houses the keel winch.(The big hole below the winch handle).

2. Remount the tiller on the rudder so it passes through this hole. You can
cut the rudder shorter in height or just move the mounting point lower. By
mounting the tiller lower you will get the added benefit of less twist of
the rudder in high seas. The tiller arm can attach to the rudder with pins
for easy disassembly, rather than nuts and bolts.

3. Install a traveler track on top of the transom similar to installations
in most other sailboats. The tiller is no longer in the way.

4. Cover the hole in the transom with a large floor shift boot. Cut the hole
for the shift stick larger to accomodate the tiller. This boot will keep out
water and oil.

5. You can cut and modify the tiller so it hinges inside the cockpit to get
it out of the way.

6. The keel winch handle can be replace by a ratcheting assembly such as a
socket wrench and socket. This will allow you to raise and lower the keel
without hitting the tiller with the winch handle.

This type of scheme allows you to mount the traveler in an out of the way
place, and improves the handling of the rudder. It is also low cost as you
don't need any additional hardware to mount the traveler. The drawback is
that you have to cut a hole in the transom.
