Rye:
Try the Speed Check Radar gun for $88. (715)-583-2240 Also look on the
internet. It's a cheap radar gun that may be able to shoot through
fiberglass. Just average the forward and rear speeds of the boat.
The device is also handy for triggering automobile radar alarms, fun for
highway travel and educational for kids.

Concerning precision (I leave the practical to others!):
1 inch = .0494 knot-seconds
1 ft = .5925 knot-seconds
1 yd = 1.77 knot-seconds
1 mile = 3,128.4 knot-seconds

The diameter of the correct nylon bolt for the P-19 keel is .0154
knot-seconds.
To get your automobile speedometer to read in knots, replace the tires with
ones that are 1.15 times greater in diameter. For example replace a 29"
diameter tire with a 33.35" inch tire. The tire will turn slower for a given
speed. To even further enhance the effect, replace the car steering wheel
with a ship's spoked wooden wheel.
The Potter Baja trailer already reads in knots because of the larger
diameter tires.
