At boat show I saw the Mast Raising System (MRS) for Hunter and new
"mastender" system from Compaq demonstrated.

The Hunter system uses SSteel posts attached permanently like baby shrouds.
(Stays are forward and aft. the lines on the sides are shrouds) You release
backstay and lower mast. As mast goes down it is supported by baby shroud
poles which lift mast off base and allow you to slide it fwd to bow rail
attachment point. As you slide fwd to bow rail top of mast slides onto a
crutch at stern. The shrouds got tangled two or three times before the guy
got it to work - sorta like the P19 system...

The Compaq system was a million times simpler. The mast is fixed and goes
thru cabin roof to step on keel. It bends above the gooseneck. So you lower
your sail and boom onto a gallows at stern of boat. Then you bend mast down
holding it from forestay. It falls perfectly on gallows. You strap shrouds to
boom, place cover on mast, boom and sails and take off. To raise mast you
remove cover, lift mast up by hand and attach forestay. Then you are ready to
sail. Boom and sail rise together to proper location. Now.. that! is the way
to go! I want it...
