It's a joke, of course.

It really surprises me sometimes how people take things seriously --
someone out pottering in 80 knot winds pouring a quart of salad oil over
the side -- I was chuckling to myself for *hours* over the utter droll
absurdity of that image. But no one else seemed to think it was funny.

Specifying the top speed of a potter to more than *one* significant
figure seems absurd to me, to tell you the truth.
