Sculling and Topping Lift

Larry & Lin Pardey have a detailed section on installing, making, and
using a sculling oar in The Self-Sufficient Sailor pp. 103 on. As noted
in an earlier post, a usable sculling oar would be quite long, depending
somewhat on how tall the person using the oar. I would think at least
10 ft for a P19.

Re the topping lift, the boom is so light you can skip the cheek block
by simply tying one end to the masthead, running the other end through
an eye at the aft end of the boom and securing with a cleat on the boom
wherever convenient. Only one line instead of two to tangle up when
raising the mast.
