Thanks for both responses Harry. . .
I'd been wondering how much fuel I could transfer using just the squeeze
bulb. I own a new-condition Evinrude tank (full of 10-year-old gas. . .)
with a squeeze bulb type hose attached. . .seems like I could just plumb it
into the engine's tank as you describe (or into a fitting on a spare tank
cap) and voila. . .I'll bet it would be enough to fill the little tank in a
minute or so of squeezing.

The reason I went to shock cord on my self steering apparatus was because
the surgical tubing I bought did not function with my jam cleat. I've
decided to try a pigtail of 1/4" nylon spliced to the surgical tubing. .
.maybe 14" of tube versus a couple of feet of nylon. . .get the
responsiveness from the piece of tubing and still be able to cleat to the
tiller so handily.

Ken

I'm sure the problem is the bungeee. It just has too much initial
resistance to stretch. Your setup sounds correct otherwise and the response
will be much better with surgical tubing. .
