Hey SF,

Are you speaking of the Evinrude 4-stroke model? It seems all of the
4-strokes are around 50-60 pounds. The weight you give for the Evinrude
sounds like a 2-stroke.

I looked at E/J last year when I was in the market for a outboard. What
was compelling about the Evinrude was the availability of service and
parts. But that was about it. As far as I could tell, the Evinrude 4/5hp
4-stroke was either new for, or the second year in '99. This concerned me
regarding reliability. On examining the engine there was a lot of plastic.
Also, you cannot transport the Evinrude on it's side, otherwise the oil
leaks out. The price was also a ridiculous $1300 for a 'Made in China'
product.

I would have considered Nissan, but the places I visited didn't seem to
want to notice that I was spending a good deal of time looking at a product
they had for sale and might have some desire to buy one!

On reputation mostly, I found and bought a Honda 5hp/4-cycle for a price
better than any other. In calling around various listed dealers, prices
for the Honda were everywhere between $950 and $1600 for the exact same
outboard!
