That'll teach me to post when tired. I did, of course, mean to use a
block and tackle setup with enough purchase to be able to handle it
easily. This would take care of the ability to stop it if something was
going wrong. A quick hitch around the lines below the block would hold
it if you had to go do something.

The car approach at least isolates the driver from a failure and provides brakes to hold up the operation if anything goes wrong.
