The more important factor is whether you have poured your quart of salad
oil over the side. The salad oil, of course, is pushed ahead of the
boat by the wind, and therefore reduces the friction between the boat
and the water. Very high speeds are attainable this way. A good sailor
making careful use of wave patterns can remain airborn for minutes at a
time.
