You're welcome,Carl.. I think that larger heavier cruising sailboats
sheet in the main to heave to, but on the little P-15, most of us have
always let the main completely out so that it was in fact, completely
de-powered.. then what happens, is the boat then tries to turn away
from the wind, and moves about four or five feet away from the wind,
at which point the steeply cocked rudder "Catches", and steers the boat
back straight into the wind, until the power builds up on the backed jib
and forces the bow back off the wind, the rudder catches again... sort
of a "C" shaped movement. and the P-15 will slowly crab downwind in
this way.. The fact that you had sheeted down hard ,means the
gust that hit you really had lots of leverage to lay you over, augmented
by your being on the "low" side. I once had a complete 180 degree
knockdown by sheeting down very tightly to see how much of a gust
it would take to knock Aillte over! to my chagrin, I found out very
quickly! To my great good fortune once I climbed back into the cockpit
, my weight on the upwind rail popped her back upright again.

Cheers... Bruce
