[WWP] Centerboard

There has been alot of discussion in the past about securing the
centerboard on a P-19. Three ideas I recall seeing include: 1) Screw pad
eyes onto the trunk in the vertical position to fasten bungee/truckers
straps, 2) use a through pin to hold the trunk in place (see a note on
this from Jim Nolan below) 3) use the factory set-up with the break away
hold downs. In all cases, some sort of seal needs to be placed between
the top of the trunk and the underside of the top of the centerboard. I
like the factory set-up it looks very marine and it seems like you just
need to keep some extra bolts around.

Myself, I use a 3/16" aluminum shear pin in combination with a bungee that
is there mostly to hold the board down onto the trunk. I line the
underside of the centerboard top with 1/2" foam weather stripping. I have
to change the weather stripping every 5 or six sails, but it's cheap. The
bungee cord runs from one side of the shear pin, over the top of the board,
then back to the otherside. That makes four methods. Mine is typicalof
the solutions I tend to favor - cheap and I don't have to drill any holes
or mount anything. - Eric

Note on shearpins:
>You want the pin to yield at 500 lbs single shear so it will give at 1000
>lbs double shear (as is the keel and trunk geometry). The two aluminum
>alloys I mentioned have about 13,000 PSI yield. This means 500lbs/13000PSI =
>.0385 in^2 cross sectional pin area. Divide the area by 3.14 (pi) and take
>the square root which gives a radius of .1107 in or a diameter of .2213
>inches. This means a 1/4" aluminum dowel of the previously mentioned
>aluminum alloys (shear approx 13,000 psi) will do the trick.
