A "handy-billy" (essentially a self-cotained block & tackle -- think of a
boom vang) also works well. My emergency system is essentially as you
describe, but using the tackle in place of a come-along. Everything I
put on the boat that is metal and not specifically designed for marine
use (plus some that are so intended) eventually rusts, so I try to shy
away from some things that work so well on land.
