An important point to remember in rigging the mast is to be sure the topping
lift is aft of the stays on the mast if the jib is a roller furling genoa.
I experienced the trauma of the roller becoming jammed when the slack
topping lift became wrapped up in the furling sail. It was a few hairy
moments (of course I was furling because of high winds) until I realized
that I needed to let out the jib again to release the topping lift. It was
the only problem I experienced on a gorgeous week of sailing on Squam Lake
in New Hampshire. Squam (which gained fame as the Golden Pond in the movie
of the same name starring Kathryn Hepburn with Jane and Henry Fonda) has
fairly restricted access so traffic was light, especially during the week.
A loon commuted across our bay at 3 pm every afternoon. The sunset cruises
were magnificient. The only equipment to break happened during the
trailering back to NJ.
