SF,

I don't have problems with my Main snagging on the topping lift line while
raising the main. I leave the line slack enough that the wind billows it
out beyond the sail while underway. That's probably why the 1/8" line
jumped out of the block in the first place.

Bill,

Our 1997 P19 has a topping lift that runs through a cheek block that is
factory mounted on the port side of the mast just below the masthead. It
has worked well for us over the past couple of years. I had one problem
with the factory installation and that was the 1/8" topping lift line that
was supplied got wedged between the block and the mast ( the 1/8" line
installed by the factory is too small for the block they use). While
sailing the topping lift line is slack and the wind lifted it enough to
run
out of the block. When I pulled on it the raise the boom end, it really
wedged itself good between the mast and block. Since we keep our P19
rigged
and moored all summer, it would have required me to lower the mast to
clear
the line from between the pinch point. The factory block is designed for a
larger line (up to 3/8"). So we went for the last month of sailing that
season without any topping lift control. Fortunately it got stuck in the
slack position, so it didn't affect sailing. During the winter, I replaced
the 1/8" factory line with 1/4" line. Haven't had a problem since. Being
able to raise the boom way up and out of the way while at dockside or
motoring is a nice feature.

They must get thousands of those non-ball-bearing-cheek-blocks for a buck
at
IM - They use'em for everything like Jiffy reefing, topping lift, etc.

I imagine you could fly a fair sized spinnaker from that huge non ball
bearing
cheekblock since you put a 1/4" line through it... Now... Why does top of
mainsail always wanna tangle with topping lift and keep you from raising
sail
all the way to top? Those last 2 inches?
