>Hi JJ:
Please accept humble opinions and suggestions:
>- trailer with the motor on the transom - concensus BAD idea - but, =
has those who advocate using either a commercial strut that mounts to =
trailer or running a line to take load off transom. I do it all the =
time, but I trail Kelpie less than 100 feet
>- trailer with the rudder on the transom (yet still holding the mast up =
somehow) - Good idea - mount a set of pintles right next to the existing =
ones. Mount the support pole on the new pintles, leave the (beaching) =
rudder in place and go. This is also a neat rig when you have to go =
under a bridge.
>- finding some way to bag the jib still hanked on and sheets still run =
- Construct or buy jib bag with zipper along top and common sense =
fasteners up front edge. Many larger cruisers use them to leave jib =
rigged. Course, with mast down, the jib still on the halyard make make =
an unweildy bundle. Try it and let us know.
>- finding some way to keep the mainsail slugs in the mast/strap the =
mast to the boom (perhaps the most tricky of my thoughts) - Try this: =
install topping lift and after mainsail furled, use topping lift to =
raise aft end of boom to parallel the mast, then lower both as unit. =
Haven't tried this one either
>- running the halyards aft to the cockpit, and leaving them strung when =
dismasting - With mast down, you will need to move butt end forward to =
trailer, so halyards may have to be very long. This may not be worth =
it.
>
>I would expect to keep the boat rigged for quickness for quick trips to =
the lake, and probably yank it all down for the longer drives to =
overnight spots.
>
>Any thoughts? Please shed some thoughts as to the level of craziness =
of some of these ideas, or perhaps some of your own crazy ideas which =
might get me in the water faster. Overall, I think that 3 months work =
and 500 dollars investment might get you in the water 15 minutes faster, =
but then so would the assistance of a sailing buddy, who would probably =
bring additional assets as well,
