What is man, when you come to think upon him, but a minutely set,
ingenious maching for turning, with infinite artfulnesss, the red wine
of Shiraz into urine?
Isak Dinesen, Seven Gothic Tales

Having just been reminded of the need for direction and substance,
I'll be brief. An eminently satisfactory portable urinal,
imaginatively styled the "Little John," is available from both West
Marine and Campmor. West Marine is cheaper. Two points to note:

(1) Inspect your purchase carefully, paying particular attention to
the molding seam. If you notice any inconveniently-placed sharp
edges, you'd do well to spend a few minutes paring them down with
a file or knife. You don't want to be caught short when the boat
lurches, after all.

(2) A complementary female prosthesis, the "Lady J," is also sold. I
have no direct experience with this device, but my wife pronounces
it functional and efficient, with good directional control. After
a little practice, she says, any woman can stand and deliver.
