Its real hard to go upwind under jib alone (though not as bad with a genny).
The problem is your center of effort is so far forward (not being balanced
by the main) that you have lee helm and can't keep the boat pointed.

Jib alone is a nice way to sail sometimes downwind since you don't have the
risk of accidental gybes, though some experts caution against it because if
you're singlehanding, for instance, and fall out, the boat won't head up on
its own.
