I have been using a 3.3 Mercury outboard for seven years and have never
broken a sheer pin. The key to solving the problem is Prop Slop. Put your
engine in gear and turn the prop lock to lock, You should have about a quarter
turn lock to lock. If you have more than this check the propeller, a new one
only costs about twenty bucks. The primary cause of pin breakage is shifting
at too high of RPM's. I warm up the motor in neutral then shift and leave the
dock. I never shift back into neutral while I'm out sailing. Always start your
motor in gear when away from shore.
