My recently acquired '90 WWP (HMS) 19 restoration project came without a
stairs into the cabin (and lots of other things too). I decided to
build my own and it turned into quite a project. Because of drainage
angles and mold draft angles, nothing is square between the floor and
the cockpit wall under the door. I did some measurements and messing
around and came up with a pretty nice design that I thought I'd share
with the group. Since there is a drawing, I have attached a link to a
small web page which has the data rather than screw up the list with an
image. It's at http://www.vais.net/~ryeg/StairSideRail.htm

I made this out of 3/4" plywood and painted it white. I covered the
leading edges of the plywood (ugly stuff plywood) with 1/8" thick strips
of varnished mahogany and attached them with small #4 stainless screws
every three inches. I left the screw heads showing and they are kind of
decorative in a techno-nautical way. I also bought some of that anti
skid tape (Black) that 3M sells at hardware outlets like home depot and
put it on the two stair treads.

The whole thing looks pretty cool so I thought I'd share it with you
'guys' for a nice cold weather project. (You folks out in SFO can keep
jumping into your cabins since it's more fun to sail than to do woodwork
on nice days) Maybe I can get my kids to take a digital picture for me
and I will post it later.

One note --- My limited experience indicates that all WWPs are not
the same. It would probably be a good idea to cut out one of the rails
in cardboard to make sure that the angles are correct for your
boat....something about measure twice, cut once.

Regards and Merry Christmas All
