I put 3 on each side of my jibs, about 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 along the length,
approx 1 foot back.

I also have then hanging off each of the battens on my main.

Watching and responding to telltales will make you a much better sailor. Its
$5 well spent.
A masthead fly is also very helpful, but adds to setup time.
