As a sea scout in Marina Del Rey in the 70's we would sail to Catalina from
Long Beach and return to MDR. This made the current work in both
directions. We would swap boats with the post at long beach, sailing both
ways around San Pedro. We would generally arrive at MDR after dark, but
since this was home port we were fine. Came in once at about 2:00 a.m.
(becalmed off Redondo Beach and the engine wouldn't start), scared our
parents to death. Generally the swell was from the NW and the wind from
the west, so you sailed on a broad reach with the swell dead abeam. I
remember it as real fun. Our trips were invariably during the summer,
though the water is best (warmest) in early fall. We would always go to
the scout camp where we could moor. I recall it was pretty calm there, I
can't remember the name of the cove. Don't know if the camp is still there
either.

I would be interested in possibly joining a group a trip.
