A question about that cracked boom---is it a crack from damage, or is
the boom delaminating?

The wooden boom on my old Potter is made up of two pieces which have
been routed along one edge and then glued (and rivited) together to
form a boom with a groove into which, as Harry has said, the bolt rope
in the foot of the gunter sail slides. If the boom is delaminating,
then regluing it would be the logical solution.

The original gunter and Mk I Potter mainsail is not loose footed,
like the later Mk II sail is. I don't know whether it will set
decently if it is loose footed.
