Hi Steve:
If memory serves, the most effective way to one leg it from San Diego to
Avalon is to leave about 4 pm (from the Navy Sailing Club) and sail until
the wind quits. You should be clear of the kelp beds at least by then.
Then just head for Avalon. At 4kts, you'll arrive the next am just at
mooring check out time - thus enhancing your chance of getting one. Under 25
feet, you'll probably be put right inside the breakwater near the Casino,
and near the dinghy dock. I did it that way several times in a Chrysler 22
and it was a great trip.

Another plan, which takes longer but avoids nighttime sailing, is to use Day
1 to sail to Oceanside, Day 2 to Dana Point, and then it's usually possible
to lay Avalon on a single tack.
