A backstay is a critical support for keeping the forestay tight (for proper
sail shape) and from keeping the mast from collapsing forward when running
downwind. I don't use mine to bend the mast for better sail shape, it's used
strictly for support.
All big Potters had backstays up until mid 1992 when the company went to
the lighter mast. I have beem caught out on SF. Bay on a run with winds over
40 knots without a problem. All the newer P.19's in the Potter yachters have
added a backstay for added support. Jerry Barrilleaux (Commodore, Potter
