I have some thoughts about bending the masts on the new Potters. These
masts are topped with a cast aluminum mast cap. It is light duty and only goes
into the mast about a half inch , and it's attatched with pop rivets or sheet
metal screws. This works fine when it's just used to raise the main. And you
can attach a backstay piece to it without any problems, but now you want to
put a four to one purchase on the backstay and bend the mast. Just to be on
the safe side I would drill and tap two holes in the front of the mast , going
into the factory mast cap. Use 1/4- 20 stainless bolts with locktite. The mast
crane on my old HMS 18 is welded to the mast, this is strong but it doesn't
give me access it inside the mast for wireing. I too belong to the overkill
society, but I look at everything with a machinists eye.
