In case no one has answered...
That wierd character stuff is probably a perfectly
readable Microsoft word or other editor file. Readable
that is if you have a browser that understands it is
such a file, and knows to launch MS-word so you can read
it.

Other times these nifty strings of gobbeldygoop will show
up when somebody doesn't follow list ettiquite and posts
a picture of something.

All the characters you see have codes that take up less
than eight bits. This is a requirement to send stuff through
email. It is the responsibility of the Email software to
encode stuff sent out into this gobbeldy goop and to decode
it when it is received.

So if you have a PC somebody needs to set it up correctly
if not just discard these things and live on in blissful
ignorance as I do.
